Team GB athlete 'held up at gunpoint' at Rio 2016 Olympics

An unnamed member of Great Britain's travelling party at Rio 2016 has been held up at gunpoint, but is said to now be "safe and well".

A member of Great Britain's Olympic team has been held up at gunpoint while returning to their accommodation in Rio de Janeiro.

The news, as reported by The Guardian, is said to have caused deep shock in the Team GB camp among competitors and officials.

Members of the British travelling party have now been told to remain in the Athletes' Village at night as it is "not worth the risk" of venturing out.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, although the person in question - who was returning from a night on the town - was not left seriously hurt.

A spokesman for Team GB later confirmed the news, saying: "All members of our delegation, including the individual concerned, are accounted for, and are safe and well."

Great Britain, made up of 366 athletes in Rio, are currently second in the medals table with four days of competition to go.
