Liverpool to bid for 2026 Commonwealth Games

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson reveals that the city council are planning a bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson has revealed that the city will bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

In 2018, the UK's nomination for a host city will be chosen, and the Commonwealth Games General Assembly will select a winner the following year.

Liverpool's neighbours Manchester hosted the Games in 2002, and just two years ago, athletes competed in Glasgow for Commonwealth medals.

"Liverpool is an ambitious city and I believe we have an enormous amount to offer when it comes to hosting an event of this scale, which would be an incredibly important catalyst for regeneration, investment and raising the profile of sport," BBC News quotes mayor Anderson as saying.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and boxer Tony Bellew will be ambassadors should a bid be submitted.

The city council will carry out a feasibility study before making an official bid.
