Olympic diver Tom Daley is hopeful that he has inspired young gay people to come out after he opened up about about his sexuality last year.
The 20-year-old posted a video on YouTube in December 2013 revealing that he was in a relationship with a man, who later revealed to be Oscar-winning director Dustin Lance Black.
While the sportsman believes that revealing his homosexuality shouldn't be news, the diver has admitted that he wanted the public to find out in his own way.
In an interview with Attitude magazine, Daley said: "I really hope [my video empowered young gay people]. I filmed that video because I wanted to tell people in my own words. I wasn't ashamed, I suppose anyone in the public eye has their private life scrutinized. I guess I wanted people to find out on my terms.
"I think you're naturally going to be nervous, but I know I had a very supportive family and a tight knit group of friends. The majority of my family live in Plymouth, so when I was growing up we were always surrounded by family."
Daley is due to compete for Team England at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, which begin next week.
