Former Premier League footballer Clarke Carlisle has revealed that he "rationalised" suicide when he attempted to take his own life in December.
The 35-year-old jumped in front of a lorry on the A64 and spent almost six weeks in hospital being treated for head injuries.
Today, Carlisle helped launch the first Mental Health Charter for Sport at The Oval in London and revealed that he was at his lowest ebb of depression when he tried to commit suicide.
"There are many misconceptions about when you get to that point that attempting suicide and trying to take your own life is as an escape or to run away - that's not the truth," BBC Sport quotes Carlisle as saying.
"Depression clouds your judgement and your perspective. I actually rationalised suicide and death as the answer. It was logical and rational that everyone was better off."
On Monday, Carlisle pleaded guilty to drink-driving.
