Steven Gerrard says that he is "really happy" at the number of people that turned up for his charity golf day in Portugal.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has expressed his delight at the turnout for his charity golf day in Portugal.

Former footballers including Graeme Souness, John Aldridge and Jamie Carragher took to the course, while Manchester City duo Joleon Lescott and Gareth Barry also had a round.

The biannual tournament was in aid of the Steven Gerrard Foundation, which aims to help disadvantaged children across the UK.

"We're over here for a very important reason, that's to raise funds for important causes," Gerrard told Liverpool's official website.

"Missing golf is not the end of the world, it's just great to be here and be involved. It's great to see so many familiar faces, I've had fantastic support once again so I'm really happy."

Gerrard held a gala dinner after the tournament, which included an auction of memorabilia to help raise additional funds.
