Commonwealth medallist Gemma Gibbons out of World Judo Championships

Commonwealth and Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons will miss this month's World Judo Championships in Russia after picking up an ankle ligament injury.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Gemma Gibbons has been ruled out of this month's World Judo Championships in Russia after picking up an ankle ligament injury.

The 27-year-old, who recently recovered from a fractured wrist and shoulder reconstruction surgery, made it to the final of the women's judo -78kg competition, losing to Wales's Natalie Powell.

"This is very frustrating and bad timing with the World Championships coming up," Gibbons told BBC Sport.

"However, I know that when I am my best I can be one of the best in the world, so I will just have to keep doing the rehab to get back as soon as possible, but most importantly in good shape."

Gibbons also won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics in London.
