Great Britain win historic hockey gold

Great Britain win gold in the women's hockey with a penalty shootout victory over Netherlands.

Great Britain have won the gold medal in the women's hockey courtesy of a penalty shootout victory over Netherlands at the Rio Olympics.

Britain went into the final as the underdogs against the number-one ranked team in the world, and sure enough they spent the majority of the match on the back foot.

However, Nicola White's scrappy equaliser levelled things up at 3-3 in the final quarter and Team GB managed to hold out for penalties.

Goalkeeper Maddie Hinch proved to be the hero for the eventual winners, saving all five of Netherlands' penalties as Britain claimed their first ever women's hockey gold medal.

Hollie Webb scored the winning penalty as Britain improved on their best-ever Olympic showings of third in 1992 and 2012, beating the two-time defending champions.

Netherlands were forced to settle for silver just as they were in Athens 12 years ago, while Germany took bronze.
