George Coetzee wins Joburg Open

George Coetzee recovers from a four-shot deficit at the start of play to clinch the Joburg Open title on home soil.

George Coetzee has recovered from a four-shot deficit at the start of play to clinch the Joburg Open title on home soil.

The South Africa native claimed victory by a three-shot margin over compatriot Justin Walters, Jin Jeong and Tyrrell Hatton, all of whom finished the tournament on -16 respectively.

It was Coetzee's maiden win on the European Tour having carded no fewer than 24 top-10 finishes on the circuit previously.

The 27-year-old joked that his triumph was borne out of forgetting to get his mother a birthday present.

"I've been waiting a while and have actually been trying to play it down this week (winning)," he said to reporters afterwards. "I'm very happy."

"I get to share this with my family and friends and my caddy. It was my mum's birthday yesterday and I wanted to win it for her because I forgot to get her a present."

The Pretoria-born Coetzee also earns an invite to this summer's Open Championship due to the success.
