Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed too strong for Ian Poulter, Stephen Gallacher

Rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed ease to a 5&4 victory after a disappointing display from European pairing Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher.

Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher have slumped to a 5&4 defeat to American duo Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.

Much of this week's build-up has focused on the European talisman and Scottish rookie, but both were under par as the American pairing took centre stage at Gleneagles.

An excellent approach on the first from Reed got USA off to the perfect start, and Poulter and Gallacher spent much of the early holes fighting to keep in touch with the rookies.

However, both Reed and Spieth holed birdies before the turn to put them in full control, and their dominance continued as they created a six-shot gap by the 11th hole.

Europe improved to take the 12th - their first of the game - but a missed opening on 13 meant that USA maintained a five-shot gap with five to play.

However, a missed putt from Poulter on 14 allowed Spieth and Reed to seal what was an inevitable win to level the match up at 1-1.
