Bernard Gallacher: 'Stephen Gallacher was calm before first tee'

Three-time Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher insists that his nephew Stephen was "calm" before teeing off in his first Ryder Cup.

Bernard Gallacher has revealed that he intends to follow nephew Stephen Gallacher during his first appearance at the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Gallacher is partnering Ian Poulter against the American pairing of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in Friday morning's fourballs, but the three-time Ryder Cup skipper has insisted that the rookie was "calm" about playing in front of his home crowd.

The Scot told BBC Radio 5 live "It's been his lifetime ambition to make it and hats off to him.

"I asked him if it would make a difference if I walked around with him because he might see me. But he said no. So he's quite calm at this moment."
