Mahan and Furyk, who were both playing fourballs for the first time after sitting out yesterday's morning session, birdied four of the first seven holes to go 3 up on the Europeans at the turn.

Holes eight to 13 were all halved as the Americans kept Europe at bay before they went Dormie four with an eagle at the short par-four 14th.

Mahan's drive on the 285-yard hole just rolled off the back edge of the green before he slid home the putt.

Europe then had to win every hole to salvage a half-point and their challenge ended at the 15th as Westwood's birdie try to extend the match went just by.

The overall scoreboard now has Europe 6-4 in front, but the US could be level soon as they are ahead in the final two matches.
