Clint Dempsey captains the USA for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico.

Clint Dempsey has been named as captain for the USA's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico.

Regular skipper Carlos Bocanegra has been left out of the squad for the two games, giving Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dempsey the chance to lead the side.

"Clint is one of our most experienced players and ready to assume a more vocal leadership role," said coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

"He has been huge for us in World Cup qualifying so far and is already one of our key leaders. We know he will do a great job for these two important games."

Dempsey has made 92 appearances for his country since his debut in 2004.
