Wigan Athletic salvage late draw against Bolton Wanderers

Martyn Waghorn rescues a late draw for Wigan Athletic in their Championship clash with Bolton Wanderers.

Martyn Waghorn's goal deep into second-half injury time rescued a point for Wigan Athletic against Bolton Wanderers, but the Latics run of home games without a win now stands at 17.

There was little action of note inside the opening 15 minutes, but the game burst into life when James Perch sent an effort crashing against the frame of the goal from 20 yards.

Harry Maguire should have done better with his header, sending it high over the top of the Bolton goal, before Thomas Walker fizzed an effort narrowly wide at the other end.

Marc-Antoine Fortune spurned a golden chance to give his side the lead when he headed Josh Murphy's cross straight at a grateful Ben Amos.

Wigan thought that they had finally taken the lead just seconds before the break, only to see Leon Clarke's effort ruled out for offside.

Jermaine Pennant's shot nearly found its way through Amos at the near post a minute after the restart, and Fortune came within inches of connecting with Kim Bo-kyung's enticing cross, but still Wigan could not break the deadlock.

To make matters worse for Malky Mackay's side, Bolton then punished Wigan's wastefulness when Walker's effort took a huge deflection that deceived Ali Al-Habsi and found the back of the net.

Murphy curled an effort narrowly wide of goal before Clarke headed against the bar from close range inside the final minute as Wigan threw everything at the visitors.

With just seconds left and Wigan seemingly set for defeat, Waghorn stepped up to seal a 1-1 draw for his side with an overhead kick.
