Liverpool's American owners are said to have targeted Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez as the man that they want to replace Kenny Dalglish.

Liverpool's American owners have reportedly identified Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez as the man that they want to replace Kenny Dalglish.

Martinez has received widespread praise for masterminding the Latics' Premier League survival this season and chairman Dave Whelan has admitted that he will give the 38-year-old Spaniard "his blessing" should one of Europe's big clubs make an approach for him.

Meanwhile, the eighth-placed Reds have endured a disappointing campaign and it has been reported that the club may ask Dalglish to step down following today's final-day clash at Swansea City.

If the Scot does leave his post at Anfield, John W Henry and Tom Werner will make a formal approach for the Wigan boss, according to the Daily Star.

Martinez took charge of the Lancashire club in August 2009, following a 16-month stint as manager of Swansea City.
