Gary Caldwell hails "outstanding" Wigan Athletic display

Gary Caldwell insists that Wigan Athletic should have beaten Scunthorpe United by more goals, but declares himself "very pleased" with his side's display.

Gary Caldwell has called on his Wigan Athletic players to take confidence from their "outstanding" performance against Scunthorpe United into the rest of the campaign.

The Latics were slow off the mark in League One after claiming one point from their opening two fixtures.

Wigan comfortably brushed aside Scunthorpe 3-0 on Wednesday night, however, which Caldwell believes is a just reward for his side's hard work on the training ground.

"We were outstanding from the very first minute all the way to the end, we were totally dominant," he told the club's official website. "We could have scored more in truth, but I'm very pleased with that display.

"The lads applied a lot of the things we've been asking of them in training and I'm happy for them that they've got the result that their hard work from day one deserved.

"The players have now got confidence that they see that this way of playing will work and this way of playing is very difficult for our opponents."

Caldwell's men are now 11th in the league table ahead of their trip to Gillingham on Saturday afternoon.
