West Ham United and Newcastle United played out a goalless draw at Upton Park in a crucial match at the foot of the Premier League table.
There was controversy as Papiss Cisse saw his effort cleared off the line by Winston Reid although replays proved it had indeed went over.
The Hammers had chances of their own but couldn't find a way past Magpies' keeper Rob Elliot in the second-half as both sides settled for a point.
See how all the action unfolded in our minute-by-minute commentary below.
Welcome to Sports Mole's minute-by-minute commentary of the Premier League clash between West Ham United and Newcastle United at Upton Park.
It's crucial game for Newcastle and boss Alan Pardew as they look to respond following their 6-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool last week.
That defeat dropped them to 17th in the Premier League and they are now just five points clear of Wigan Athletic, who have a game in hand on the Magpies.
West Ham, meanwhile are all but safe from the drop and will have one eye on a revenge mission for boss Sam Allardyce who was sacked by Newcastle in 2008, after just seven months in the job.
The teams have been announced at Upton Park, and we'll begin with the home side.
West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, O'Brien, O'Neil, Nolan, Jarvis, Diame, Carroll, Vaz Te.
Newcastle: Elliot, Simpson, Taylor, Coloccini, Yanga-Mbiwa, Tiote, Cabaye, Gutierrez, Ben Arfa, Cisse, Gouffran.
BIG NEWS FOR NEWCASTLE!! Captain Fabricio Coloccini returns to the starting lineup after almost three months out with injury.
That's a huge boost for the Mapgies, and a much needed one following their 6-0 drubbing by Liverpool. This means Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will switch to left-back while Massadio Haidara drops out. Elsewhere, Danny Simpson comes in for the suspended Mathieu Debuchy and Yoan Gouffran replaces Moussa Sissoko. James Perch also misses out and is replaces by Hatem Ben-Arfa.
West Ham name an unchanged lineup from the team that lost to Manchester City last week. Andy Carroll will lead the line against his old club, while Kevin Nolan won't be far behind him in midfield.
A stat for you know, and one to boost Newcastle. West Ham have only beaten the Magpies once in their last six meetings at Upton Park.
The last time the teams met at Upton Park, the Magpies won 2-1 and the goalscorers that day were a certain, Nolan and Carroll, who are lining up against them today.
Newcastle subs: Harper, Williamson, Perch, Gosling, Anita, Campbell, Shola Ameobi.
West Ham subs: C.Cole, Collison, Henderson, Taylor, Noble, Pogatetz, J.Cole.
Shockingly despite leaving in January, Demba Ba is still the Magpies joint-leading scorer this season. Papiss Cisse is level with him on 13 goals, Alan Pardew will need him to fire, to get his side out of trouble.
Newcastle's relegation rivals Wigan Athletic are also in action today, a win for them and a defeat for the Magpies at Upton Park would leave them just two points behind Alan Pardew's side with a game in hand.
So it is crucial, Alan Pardew's side get something from this game today and put the pressure back on Aston Villa and Sunderland above them in the table.
The players are out on the pitch at Upton Park, we should be underway shortly.
Friendly greeting between former teammates Kevin Nolan and Fabricio Coloccini. West Ham will get the game underway.
We're underway at Upton Park.
Early free kick for West Ham and they launch the ball into the penalty area, Carroll causes initial problems but Elliot is there to gather to ball for the visitors.
Newcastle are nearly in as Cabaye threads a ball through to Gouffran but his first touch is poor and the opportunity goes. West Ham get a goal kick.
West Ham are keeping possession quite nicely so far, but there's been a few scrappy fouls. With Nolan and Diame guilty which has halted their momentum.
First real effort at goal as Diame races down the right channel and beats the challenge of Coloccini but he fires his effort over the bar.
An error from Elliot almost lets Vaz Te in as heads a long ball over the keeper but Taylor is there to clear the danger. Lucky escape for Elliot there.
Yellow Card! The first yellow card of the game goes to O'Brien for a robust challenge on Taylor. That was nasty.
From the resulting free kick, Ben Arfa fires a powerful effort just over the bar, with Jaaskelainen struggling to get across.
Another free kick to Newcastle and this time Cabaye whips in a dangerous ball but Collins rises highest in the area and clears with a good header.
Better pressing from West Ham as they start to pressure the Magpies defenders in their own half. Newcastle are looking composed at the moment though.
Nice bit of defensive work from Simpson eases the pressure on Newcastle as he wins the ball off Jarvis deep in Magpies territory and clears the ball.
Newcastle seem to be coping the long ball game of West Ham so far as Taylor shields the ball from Carroll and allows Elliot to collect on the edge of his box.
OFF THE LINE!! Cisse is played in behind the West Ham defence and lifts the ball over Jaaskelainen, the ball is heading in before Reid clears the ball off the line. Oh my!! Newcastle won't like this, the ball has in fact gone over the line, looking at a replay. How costly could that be?
Newcastle are playing well, as Ben Arfa hits the Hammers on the break. He runs at O'Brien before pulling the trigger but Jaaskelainen makes a comfortable save.
Ben Arfa has really come into the game in the last five minutes, he's on the ball again but does too much and goes out for a goal kick. All Newcastle at the minute.
CHANCE! Gouffran gets the ball on the edge of the area, he turns and shoots but is goalbound effort is well blocked by Collins. Good defending!
GOAL UPDATE! Big goal at the foot of the table as West Bromwich Albion take the lead against Wigan, as Shane Long scores. Huge goal in the context of the relegation battle.
Foul on Ben Arfa just outside the penalty area and Newcastle will have a good chance to force Jaaskelainen into a save.
Cabaye hits the free kick straight at the wall. A bit of a waste from that position.
GOAL UPDATE! Wigan are level at the Hawthorns as Kone gets an equaliser. Another twist in the relegation battle.
A nice bit of football from Newcastle is stopped by the assistant referee as Cabaye plays Simpson behind the defence, but a foul is given for shirt pulling.
West Ham have the ball in the net but the linesman flag was raised long in advance as Carroll was offside as he laid the ball across for Nolan to slot home. The Hammers haven't looked at the races as an attacking force today.
CHANCE Vaz Te gets a good flick on and Jarvis gets in behind, he tries to take a touch to bring the ball down but he can't quite control it and Taylor is there to clear the danger.
HALF-TIME: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle
It's goalless at the break at Upton Park. But Newcastle will feel they should be ahead as Papiss Cisse saw his effort cleared off the line by Winston Reid, when in fact the ball had actually gone over. How will that affect the relegation fight at the foot of the table?
Newcastle have been the better team and have created a few openings but they haven't really tested Jussi Jaaskelainen in the West Ham goal. The Hammers meanwhile improved slightly towards the end of the half, but it's been a lacklustre effort from them so far.
Here's a roundup of all the latest scores in the Premier League:
Fulham 0-1 Reading
Norwich 0-0 Villa
Swansea 0-0 Man City
West Brom 1-1 Wigan
Latest: Spurs 0-0 Southampton
The players are back out on the pitch and the second-half should be underway shortly.
Newcastle get the second-half underway.
West Ham win a free kick early on and again they pump the ball long into the box but the Hammers are caught offside.
CHANCE! Diame weaves his way in and out of the Newcastle defence before he passes to Jarvis who lifts a cross into the area and Carroll meets it but he heads the ball just wide.
Penalty shout! West Ham are really coming to life now as Jarvis whips another dangerous ball into the area, Vaz Te goes up for it, but he's taken out by Coloccini but referee Phil Dowd waves play on. Decent shout that.
That challenge doesn't look any better on a second viewing, that was a clumsy challenge for Coloccini and he's very lucky to get away with that.
GOAL UPDATE! West Brom retake the lead at the Hawthorns and Gareth McAuley is the man whose got the goal. Really important game there, this relegation battle is going to go down to the wire.
Newcastle win a free-kick on the edge of the area again as Ben Arfa is hauled down. Cabaye lofts the free kick over the wall but it's well saved by Jaaskelainen.
GOAL UPDATE! Aston Villa take the lead at Carrow Road, and it's Gabriel Agbonlahor whose found the net. Crucial goal for Villa, if the hold on they'll move eight points clear of the drop zone.
CHANCE! Jarvis is having a lot of success down the left in this half and he puts another cross into the area, where Carroll leaps but he can't make good contact. Vaz Te was right behind him, perhaps he should have left it for him.
Substitution: Change for West Ham as Jack Collison replaces Vaz Te.
GOAL UPDATE! Wigan are level again and it's James McArthur whose got the goal.
Another West Ham free kick and Carroll wins the ball again, his knockdown falls to Collison who tries to whip a cross into the box but he's well tackled by Coloccini.
O'Neil does well to release Diame down the left channel he tussles with Gutierrez and wins a corner.
From the resulting corner, Newcastle just hack the ball clear as Carroll looked certain to pounce.
CHANCES!!! West Ham should be in the lead but Elliot has done brilliantly to keep the scores level. Jarvis whips a ball deep to the backpost where Nolan meets it and heads down low at goal but the keeper is there to make the save and blocks Carroll's rebound. The clearance goes wide to Jarvis who tries an effort of his own but the former Charlton Athletic man makes a good save to tip the ball over. That was close!
CHANCE! A long ball over the top puts Gouffran in, Jaaskelainen for some reason charges out of his goal, the Frenchman lifts the ball over him towards the net but it goes inches wide of the post. It's all go here.
How one of these teams aren't in the lead is beyond me. Two sets of glorious chances missed.
CHANCE! West Ham launch a free kick into the area and the loose ball lands at Carroll's feet, he beats his man with a lovely bit of skill and fires a low shot, but Elliott makes the save.
GOAL UPDATE! Norwich are level against Aston Villa through a Grant Holt penalty.
CHANCE! Ameobi has an effort which goes just wide of the post. This game is really opening up now.
Yellow Card! Coloccini goes into the book for dissent.
West Ham get a free kick but waste the opportunity as O'Neill overhits the ball into the area and Elliot claims the ball with ease.
Slight stoppage in play as Ameobi comes off worse in a challenge with Reid. He's not looking that great at the minute and may need to come off.
GOAL UPDATE! Wigan have taken the lead at the Hawthorns. Callum McManaman gets the goal.
The Hammers launch another ball into the area and Carroll nearly gets on the end of it but he just can't beat Coloccini to the ball and Newcastle clear the danger.
Substitution: Joe Cole is on for West Ham now as Jarvis makes way.
Cole is in the action straight away as he wins a free kick. With the resulting cross Elliot does well to beat the ball away to safety.
Yellow Card! Tiote goes into the book for a late challenge on Cole.
CHANCE! Cole whips a free kick to the back post which clips the woodwork and as West Ham try to scramble the ball in the linesman raises his flag due to offside.
West Ham look the more likely side to press for a winner, they've come so close this half, can they get it?
There will be four minutes of added time.
Cole raids down the left and wins a corner for West Ham.
It's a poor delivery from Cole as he wastes an excellent chance to put Newcastle under pressure as he lifts his cross onto the roof of the net.
FULL-TIME: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle
It's all over at Upton Park and Newcastle earn a crucial point in their fight against the drop which moves them above rivals Sunderland in the Premier League table.
It could have been so much better for the Magpies had the officials given Papiss Cisse's goal, which crossed the line before it was hacked clear by Winston Reid. How costly could that be come the end of the season?
West Ham weren't at the races in the first-half but put a much improved performance in the second and could well have snatched a victory. The point moves them to 43 points and all but Premier League safety.
Thanks for joining Sports Mole's coverage of the clash from Upton Park. Until next time, goodbye.
