Pepe Mel explains West Bromwich Albion departure

Former West Brom manager Pepe Mel hints that he left the club because he struggled to adapt to the style of football in the Premier League.

Former West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel has claimed that he left the club because he did not want to "betray" his style of football.

The Spaniard parted company with the Baggies by mutual consent on Monday after a four-month spell at The Hawthorns.

The 51-year-old guided the team to a 17th-place finish in the Premier League table following three wins from 17 games.

Mel has now suggested that he struggled to adapt to life in the top flight of English football.

"I didn't want to betray my style of football," he told El Larguero. "The Premier League is a wonderful experience. The organisation is fantastic. Everybody should try this, but English people live football in a different way; not better, just different.

"And I couldn't betray the way I understand football should be [played]. They invented this game and they have their own style."

David Moyes, Tim Sherwood and Chris Hughton are among the early contenders to replace Mel at West Brom.
