Contenders for West Bromwich Albion job

Roy Hodgson's decision to take charge of England has left West Bromwich Albion seeking a new manager. Here, Sports Mole brings you the early contenders for the Hawthorns role.

With all the attention over Roy Hodgson being appointed the new England manager earlier today, it has somewhat gone under the radar that West Bromwich Albion now require a new coach.

A number of managers have been linked with the post that had been held by Hodgson since February 2011.

Here, Sports Mole brings you the top five contenders that are currently believed to be at the top of the Baggies' shortlist.

Alan Curbishley

Curbishley made his wish to get back into management common knowledge when he held discussions with Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this year. That switch never materialised, although the 54-year-old is reportedly still keen to cut his teeth in the Premier League again. The former Charlton Athletic boss has not held a managerial post since leaving West Ham United in 2008.

Chris Hughton

The 53-year-old was just pipped to the West Brom post by Hodgson 18 months ago. He has since taken charge of Birmingham City, who he has guided to the Championship playoffs. When asked about the West Brom job earlier today, Hughton was quick to distance himself from the speculation. However, if the Blues fail to reach the Premier League he could be tempted to reapply.

Michael Appleton

Appleton learnt his trade under Hodgson during his coaching stint at the Hawthorns. The 36-year-old is now in charge of Portsmouth, who he was unable to stop from dropping down to League One. With the financial problems currently crippling the Fratton Park club, reports have suggested that Appleton would jump at a chance of a clean break.

Roberto Martinez

Martinez's future at Wigan Athletic, regardless of what league the club are playing in next season, has been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks. The Spaniard may tempted by the challenge of managing an established Premier League side who are not fighting relegation every season.

Steve Bruce

Having had almost six months out of the game, Bruce is now said to be eager to make a return to management. The former Manchester United defender has a wealth of experience at coaching level, having guided the likes of Crystal Palace, Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic.
