Matej Vydra penalty wins it for Watford

Matej Vyrdra's second-half penalty is enough for Watford to record a 1-0 win over Blackpool in the Championship this evening.

Matej Vydra's second-half penalty was enough for Watford as they beat Blackpool 1-0 at Bloomfield Road in the Championship this evening.

There were spot kicks for each side, although Nile Ranger struck the post with his after Vydra had earlier given the Hornets the lead away from home.

The home side had a couple of early shot blocked by the Hornets' defence, with neither Edu Oriol nor Tony McMahon able to make the breakthrough.

Ishmael Miller was next to try his luck for the Seasiders, but his attempt was well saved by Heurelho Gomes on 20 minutes.

Joel Ekstrand was denied by the crossbar on 23 minutes when he headed his effort against the woodwork from Daniel Tozser's corner.

Toszer's set pieces caused more problems moments later but this time it was Gabriele Angella who sent an effort over the bar.

The visitors were awarded a penalty after the restart when McMahon fouled Lloyd Dyer inside the area, and Vydra stepped up and made no mistake from 12 yards to give the Londoners the lead on 68 minutes.

Substitute Ranger earned a spot kick for his side with 10 minutes remaining, but the former Newcastle United striker could only hit the woodwork with his own effort from 12 yards.
