The visitors controlled possession for much of the first half, but were unable to find an effective final ball until after 17 minutes, when Bas Dost connected with a Terence Kongolo cross to test Wales keeper Wayne Hennessey.

Chris Coleman's side responded immediately through Blackburn Rovers forward Tom Lawrence, who tried his luck from the edge of the Dutch penalty box, but his effort was comfortable for Netherlands shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen.

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben troubled the Welsh defence on a number of occasions and almost found an opener on the half-hour mark, firing wide from 25 yards.

The Netherlands took the lead on 32 minutes through Dost, who connected with an inviting Daryl Janmaat cross to head past Hennessey for his first international goal.

Wales found an equaliser against the run of play on the stroke of half time, when Kongolo handled the ball inside his own penalty area following a corner. Joe Allen's penalty attempt was saved by Cillessen, but Ledley connected with the rebound to fire past the Ajax man.
