Landon Donovan has been handed a surprise return to the USA setup after being called into Jurgen Klinsmann's preliminary 31-man squad for next month's CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The Los Angeles Galaxy forward has not represented his country since last August after taking an extended break from the game, citing fatigue as the reason for his absence.
After returning to form for Galaxy in recent weeks, Klinsmann has decided that the time is right to recall Donovan for the tournament that starts on July 8 in the USA.
Klinsmann's side will still be without the 31-year-old for three crucial World Cup qualifiers next week, which begin with a clash against Jamaica in Seattle.
The former Everton playmaker has 144 caps for the United States, including appearances at three successive World Cup finals.
