Sam Allardyce confirms interest in taking USA job

Sam Allardyce confirms that he is interested in potentially becoming the next coach of the United States national team.

Former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has confirmed that he is open to becoming the new coach of the United States national team.

Bruce Arena stepped down from the role last week following the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Allardyce walked away from Palace at the end of last season, citing a desire to spend some time away from football, but now the 62-year-old has admitted that he would consider a return to international coaching.

The former Sunderland boss was handed the England job in July last year, but he lasted just 67 days in the role after getting caught up in a corruption scandal.

"If I ever go back into football, an international position again might be of interest to me. Whether that is the USA, who knows," Allardyce told talkSPORT.

"If we got to that stage where we there was an interview, you would assess whether you have a chance of being successful with that national side and, if you do, is that a better challenge for me at this stage of my life?"

Arena had two spells in charge of the USA team, the first of which was from 1998 to 2006.
