Jermain Defoe fires Toronto to victory over DC United

Jermain Defoe scores in the second half to lead Toronto to a 1-0 home victory over DC United in the MLS.

Jermain Defoe's third goal in two matches in the MLS proved enough for Toronto to defeat DC United 1-0 at home tonight.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker could have added to the two goals he netted against the Seattle Sounders last Saturday after just four minutes at BMO Field in Toronto.

However, Defoe failed to keep his header from Jonathan Osorio's cross on target.

Next to come close for the hosts was Gilberto on 14 minutes, before Defoe and Michael Bradley had chances in quick succession.

Eddie Johnson and Nick DeLeon were thwarted by Toronto goalkeeper Julio Cesar on the half-hour mark, while Defoe was denied by the post when he tried to turn in a Gilberto cross.

However, the England international forward was not to be disappointed on the hour mark when he shot home past Bill Hamid from inside the United box.

The victory was Toronto's second in a row after they started their 2014 MLS campaign with a 2-1 away win against the Sounders last weekend.
