Sir Geoff Hurst: Redknapp is England's only option

Sir Geoff Hurst says that Harry Redknapp is the "sole choice" in the race to become next England manager.

Sir Geoff Hurst has described Harry Redknapp as the "sole choice" in the race to become the next England manager.

The 1966 World Cup winner has urged Football Association chiefs to appoint an Englishman as the long-term permanent successor to Fabio Capello.

Hurst believes that, given the top six clubs are managed by foreigners, that leaves the Tottenham Hotspur manager as the only viable candidate.

"Stuart has said he may want to be involved in the summer but doesn't see it is a long-term job after that," the 70-year-old told talkSPORT. "So my view is we should be looking for a long-term manager now to take us into the Euros and beyond.

"If we are looking that way and it's got to be English I think there is only one candidate who stands out a mile. Normally you can put half a dozen managers in the hat but I think, in this particular time, there are very few.

"You can knock out the top six clubs, who have all got foreign managers, including a Scot in Sir Alex, and you have only got one candidate. The sole choice is Harry Redknapp for me."

FA general secretary Alex Horne has said that the governing body will appoint a permanent England manager when the season comes to a close.
