Christian Eriksen: 'Southampton defeat not down to Chelsea game'

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen insists that his side were not suffering a hangover from their draw with Chelsea during their defeat to Southampton.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen has insisted that his side's 2-1 defeat to Southampton this afternoon had nothing to do with their draw against Chelsea on Monday night.

Spurs blew a two-goal lead at Stamford Bridge on a night that saw them pick up a Premier League record nine yellow cards and miss out on the title after only managing a point against their London rivals.

They once again squandered a lead at White Hart Lane today as Southampton came from behind to condemn Mauricio Pochettino's side to only their third home defeat of the season, but Eriksen insists that there was no hangover from Monday's disappointment.

"We tried as much as we could. It's been a long season and this defeat wasn't because of Monday. The last few games we haven't managed to keep it going," he is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"We had a good first 20 minutes but we didn't win. We were a bit unlucky today - we had chances and there were two great saves. We missed the last chance, whereas Saints had three chances and scored two goals.

"The last game of the season will be for pride and to keep ourselves where we want to be. We need to finish strong. Playing Newcastle will be a tough game, especially if they have something to play for. Let's hope we finish well."

The defeat leaves Spurs just three points above North London rivals Arsenal ahead of the Gunners' meeting with Manchester City this afternoon.
