Unai Emery has been sacked following Spartak Moscow's 5-1 loss to local rivals Dynamo.
The thrashing came just days after the side were knocked out of the Champions League after losing 3-0 to Barcelona.
The club's general director Valery Karpin said: "The club's shareholders have taken the decision that Unai Emery will no longer coach Spartak. We will announce our next steps soon."
Spartak won the Russian Premier League nine times between 1992 and 2001, but have not won a domestic trophy since 2003.
