Virgil van Dijk, Sam Gallagher net in Southampton win

Southampton continue their preparations for the new campaign with a 2-1 win over FC Twente in Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Virgil van Dijk and Sam Gallagher were both on the scoresheet as Southampton continued their preparations for the new season with a 2-1 win over FC Twente in the Netherlands.

The Saints opened their pre-season with a 4-0 success over PEC Swolle at the weekend and put another victory on the board on Wednesday as they build towards their Premier League opener against Watford on August 13.

Southampton opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Van Dijk had the simple task of turning a Dusan Tadic cross into the back of the net from close range, and it was 2-0 in the 69th minute when Gallagher's effort dropped over the line after some clumsy defending from the hosts.

Peet Bijen had one back for Twente 15 minutes from time after rifling one into the roof of the net, but the English outfit held on to make it back-to-back wins under new boss Claude Puel.

Jay Rodriguez, Charlie Austin and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were all involved for the Saints.
