Jose Fonte: 'Southampton must improve at home'

Southampton team captain Jose Fonte believes that his side must improve their home form if they are to challenge for a top-six place in the Premier League.

Southampton team captain Jose Fonte has suggested that his side must improve at home if they are to challenge for a top-six place in the Premier League.

The Saints are unbeaten away from home so far this season, but have only won three matches at St Mary's Stadium, and the 31-year-old insists that his team are working hard to improve their home form.

"Away from home we have been very, very good," Fonte told Sky Sports News. "We haven't lost yet and we've had some great results.

"Possibly it's easier for us to play away from home because teams come and attack us more, and give us more space. It gives people like Sadio [Mane] and [Dusan] Tadic more space and more time on the ball to go and create.

"At home they come and they sit a little bit more - make it difficult for us, try and play on the break. If you want to go to the highest level and compete for the top-five or top-six we need to come up with a way of winning these types of games."

Southampton, who are currently eighth in the Premier League table, take on Manchester City this afternoon.
