Scunthorpe United sack manager Graham Alexander

Scunthorpe United part company with boss Graham Alexander after seeing their winless run stretch to an eighth game against Rochdale on Saturday afternoon.

League One promotion hopefuls Scunthorpe United have sacked manager Graham Alexander after extending their winless run to an eighth match on Saturday afternoon.

The Irons were held to a 1-1 draw by Rochdale at Glanford Park, leaving them without victory in close to two months.

Despite winning just two of their 14 league games this calendar year, Scunthorpe still sit fifth in the table and are two points clear of seventh.

However, a statement released on the club's official website has confirmed that a new manager will be brought in to see through the remainder of the campaign.

"Scunthorpe United FC can confirm that manager Graham Alexander and assistant manager Neil McDonald have this evening both been relieved of their duties," the statement read. "The club would wish to place on record their appreciation of Graham's efforts."

Alexander, whose only previous permanent managerial job came at Fleetwood Town, celebrated two years in charge of Scunthorpe on Thursday.
