John O'Shea: 'We left ourselves too open against Belgium'

Republic of Ireland defender John O'Shea says that his side left themselves "too open" in their 3-0 defeat to Belgium at Euro 2016 in Bordeaux.

Republic of Ireland defender John O'Shea has bemoaned his side's lack of discipline and control following their defeat to Belgium at Euro 2016 in Bordeaux.

Martin O'Neill's side were on the end of a 3-0 defeat to the Red Devils after conceding two goals from Romelu Lukaku and another from Axel Witsel.

Ireland have now gone two games without a win following their opening 1-1 draw with Sweden, meaning that they will need to beat Group E winners Italy in order to reach the last 16.

After the match against Belgium, O'Shea told ITV Sport: "The big thing for us was to make sure we started the second half quicker and better in possession, but we didn't do that. We left ourselves too open for the counter-attack.

"Belgium are a good team, don't get me wrong, but we have a big chance against Italy. Italy have been fantastic, we know it's difficult, believe me, but we have to take the positives from today and from the Sweden game, and if we do that with a bit more discipline and control we can [get a result against Italy].

"We need to dust ourselves down, we see how everybody is and we go for Italy in Lyon."

The Republic produced 10 shots during the game, but none was on target.
