Steve Staunton questions Ireland's next generation

Steve Staunton admits that he fears for the future of the Republic of Ireland national side.

Former Republic of Ireland international Steve Staunton is unsure whether there are enough quality Irish youngsters coming through to replace the current squad members.

It has been reported that the likes of Shay Given, John O'Shea, Richard Dunne and Damien Duff will all retire following the conclusion of tonight's final Euro 2012 group match against Italy.

If that speculation comes to fruition, Staunton has admitted that he is worried about the future.

"Although we have some promising young strikers like Shane Long, I don't know much about where the next goalkeeper, defenders or midfielders are coming from," Staunton told BBC Sport.

The majority of the club's elder members are expected to make announcements on their international futures over the coming days.
