Bradley Wright-Phillips brace takes New York Red Bulls past Sporting Kansas City

Bradley Wright-Phillips scores a late brace to guide the New York Red Bulls to a 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a late brace as the New York Red Bulls came from behind to beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1 in the first round of the MLS playoffs.

New York dominated a goalless first half, and missed a great chance to make it an easier evening when Tim Cahill sent a shot over the crossbar from inside a congested penalty area.

Sporting took the lead shortly after half time when Dominic Dwyer collected a through-ball from Benny Feilhaber following a swift break and guided the ball neatly into the bottom corner.

It took the New Yorkers until the 77th minute to draw level as Thierry Henry picked out Wright-Phillips inside the box, allowing his strike partner to fire home from close range.

As the fans started to prepare for extra time, the Red Bulls secured the win in dramatic fashion as Ambroise Oyongo's cross reached Wright-Phillips, who kept calm to fire his side into the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
