Michel Platini issues racism statement

UEFA president Michel Platini has released a statement 'condemning' recent incidents of racism in Spanish football.

Barcelona right-back Dani Alves suffered abuse earlier this month during his side's 3-2 win over Villarreal at El Madrigal, when a banana was thrown from the crowd towards the Brazilian.

There was also an incident this weekend, with a handful of Atletico Madrid supporters pictured seemingly making monkey gestures towards Levante's Pape Diop towards the end of their league clash in Valencia.

"UEFA and its President Michel Platini strongly condemn all forms of discrimination including recent racist behaviour of fans in Spain," read the statement.

"UEFA has tough rules and sanctions against all forms of discrimination for all its competitions.

"Where instances occur outside of our jurisdiction, we support appropriate action being taken by the relevant authorities."

Alves's club teammate Neymar and Real Madrid defender Marcelo have also reportedly suffered racial abuse during La Liga matches this season.
