Real Madrid fans favour Gareth Bale for left-back role

Gareth Bale is backed by 50% of fans to replace the suspended Marcelo for their Champions League second-leg match against Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid fans have backed Gareth Bale to reprise his left-back duties for their Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid.

Regular left-back Marcelo is out of the fixture due to suspension, having picked up a yellow card during their 0-0 draw on Tuesday in the first leg.

The Welshman has been favoured by supporters to replace the Brazilian, according to an online poll run by Marca.

Bale received 50% of the vote, ahead of Portuguese left-back Fabio Coentrao, with 37.4%, and Nacho and Alvaro Arbeloa in third and fourth respectively.

At the start of his career with Southampton, Bale's preferred position was left-back, before a move to Tottenham Hotspur sparked a move up the field under Harry Redknapp.
