Gareth Bale: 'I'm a number 10 - not a winger'

Gareth Bale urges Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez to continue using him in a number 10 role throughout the 2015-16 campaign.

Gareth Bale has floated the idea of operating in a central role for Real Madrid after impressing against former club Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly tonight.

The Welsh winger added to James Rodriguez's first-half opener as the Blancos prepared for their 2015-16 campaign with a 2-0 win in Munich.

Coach Rafael Benitez elected to use Bale - the world's most expensive player following his £85m move from Tottenham two years ago - in a number 10 role as opposed to on the flanks.

Last season saw the 26-year-old struggle in a wide position under Carlo Ancelotti, and the former Spurs man hopes to be afforded a free role by the Spaniard this time around.

"It's my best position," he told reporters. "When I played for Tottenham, I felt I played my best football there and, when I play for Wales, I play there and play my best football. For me, that's my position and it's where I want to play.

"I'm able to go out to the left and the right and it's what I was doing at Tottenham and what I do for Wales.

It's great to have the support of the manager and the president (Florentino Perez) and, hopefully, I can repay them with some goals and trophies."

Bale has 37 goals and 27 assists from his first two seasons in the Spanish capital.
