Xabi Alonso backs Asier Illarremendi

Xabi Alonso says that Real Madrid teammate Asier Illarramendi "is the future" of the club.

Xabi Alonso has claimed that Real Madrid teammate Asier Illarramendi "is the future" of the club.

The 24-year-old joined Madrid from Real Sociedad last summer, but struggled to make an impact during his first season at the Bernabeu.

Alonso, however, has backed the £34m midfielder to thrive in the capital.

"Illarra is the future. He is in his first year with a major change. It is important for him. I have no doubt [of his talent]," Alonso told Cadena Cope.

"Madrid is a bull and we must be prepared for this – and Asier is going to be."

Alonso is currently on international duty with Spain ahead of this summer's World Cup.
