Steve McManaman hits out at "woeful" Real Madrid

Steve McManaman is highly critical of the way that his former club Real Madrid defended during their 2-0 loss away at Wolfsburg.

Steve McManaman has provided a damning assessment of the way that Real Madrid defended during last night's Champions League clash against Wolfsburg.

The ten-time European champions were defeated 2-0 at the Volkswagen Arena, which has left them with an uphill battle to qualify for the semi-finals ahead of next week's second leg in the Spanish capital.

Talking to BT Sport after the final whistle, McManaman described the team's display from a defensive perspective as "woeful".

"I thought they were woeful, I really did," said the ex-Madrid winger.

"Defensively the right-back (Danilo) and left-back (Marcelo) were just all over the place, coupled with Pepe and [Sergio] Ramos who looked like they hadn't played with each other before.

"I was astounded as to how bad they were. I expected a real calm, measured performance as well. It was like schoolboy, Under-10s or Under-12s defending."

Seven points adrift of La Liga leaders Barcelona and out of the Copa del Rey, the Champions League represents Madrid's only realistic chance of silverware this season.
