Lucas Vazquez: 'Penalty call was correct'

Real Madrid attacker Lucas Vazquez says that Michael Oliver was right to award the reigning European champions a late penalty against Juventus on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid attacker Lucas Vazquez has insisted that English referee Michael Oliver was right to award the reigning European champions a late penalty against Juventus on Wednesday night.

The Champions League quarter-final looked to be heading for extra time after Juventus scored three times at the Bernabeu to level the aggregate score at 3-3.

Cristiano Ronaldo sent Los Blancos into the semi-finals, however, when he converted a 98th-minute penalty after Vazquez had been bundled to the ground by Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia.

Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was sent off in the protests that followed, but Vazquez has insisted that the award of the penalty was the correct decision.

"Was it a penalty? Yes, Cristiano knocked the ball to me near the penalty spot and, just as I was about to finish it off, the centre-back came from behind me and ran me down. There's no question about it," Vazquez told beIN Sports.

"Juve's protests? They were normal, it was the last minute. The match? Tonight (Wednesday) needs to be a lesson for us. Whoever relaxes, pays for it. The Champions League forgives no-one. We knew we had to suffer until the end and our goal puts us in the semi-finals, which is the most important thing."

The draw for the semi-finals of the competition - which includes Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Roma - will take place on Friday.
