Half-Time Report: Real Madrid maintain five-goal aggregate lead

Real Madrid and Schalke 04 both score in the first half of their Champions League match at the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have remained five goals up on aggregate against Schalke 04 after both sides scored in the first half of the second leg of their Champions League tie at the Bernabeu.

The home side had the majority of the early possession, but created few chances in the opening 15 minutes.

Xavi Alonso set up the first real chance of the game, delivering a free kick to the head of Alvaro Morata, but the striker's effort cleared the crossbar.

The Spanish side took the lead just a couple of minutes later as Gareth Bale, who came off the bench early on, sent in a low cross for Cristiano Ronaldo to fire into the back of the net.

The Welsh international almost set up a second for the hosts on the half-hour mark, sprinting down the wing before looking for Morata, but the Spaniard's finish from close range went just wide.

Real were punished for the miss a couple of minutes later, as Tim Hoogland's long-range effort took a deflection off Sergio Ramos before finding the bottom corner.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar almost put the visitors ahead late, but his shot was high and wide against his former club, leaving Real with a 7-2 advantage on aggregate.
