Reading twice came from behind to beat Peterborough and avoid an upset in the Capital One Cup second round tonight.

All five goals were scored in a thrilling first half, with four coming in a pulsating seven-minute spell.

Paul Taylor gave free-scoring Posh an 11th-minute lead when his left-footed strike from the edge of the area snuck past Adam Federici in the Reading net.

Peterborough's lead lasted all of three minutes as shrewd summer signing Pavel Pogrebnyak netted his second Royals goal, capitalising on a defensive mix-up to score from close range.

However, the Championship side were in front again just over 60 seconds later when captain Lee Tomlin made a late run into the box to convert from eight yards.

The end-to-end scoring was completed when Reading equalised again courtesy of former Nottingham Forest defender Chris Gunter, who struck low into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

A comparatively quiet 20 minutes followed but Brian McDermott's side edged in front for the first time with what would prove to be the decisive goal.

Danny Guthrie's cross was diverted into his own net by Peterborough defender Nathaniel Knight-Percival as Reading secured their passage into the third round.
