Scott Arfield strike earns Burnley narrow win over Rangers

Burnley dig deep to secure a 1-0 victory over Rangers at Ibrox courtesy of Scott Arfield's first-half strike.

Burnley have recorded a 1-0 victory over Rangers in the first meeting between the two teams in nearly a century.

A Gers side including debutants Martyn Waghorn and James Tavernier got things underway, and they almost had an instant breakthrough when David Templeton fired narrowly wide of target.

New-boys Tavernier and Waghorn soon managed to get into their groove, with the former coming within inches of picking out his teammate at the back post.

Rangers continued to dominate the game's best openings, as Waghorn saw his shot kept out by Matt Gilks between the sticks, but Wes Foderingham had to remain alert up the other end as Burnley sprung a counter-attacking move.

It was the Clarets who took the first-half lead, after Scott Arfield cut inside and curled a shot beyond the reach of Foderingham into the corner.

Both sides opted to make a mass of changes in a disrupted second half, but Rangers continued to look strong as they put attacks together in wide positions.

The Gers were unable to create any real major openings, however, to ensure that Burnley claimed bragging rights in the first meeting between the two in 93 years.
