Notts County have appointed Andy Watson as the club's new first-team coach.
The 53-year-old was Alex McLeish's assistant manager at Rangers and Birmingham City, winning two Scottish Premier League titles and the League Cup.
He becomes County boss Chris Kiwomya's first addition to the backroom staff at Meadow Lane.
Hughes told the club's official website: "I hope to impact some of the experience I've gathered and take the boys forward."
"Having spoken with Chris and [chief executive] Jim Rodwell, I know that they've got a love and a passion for the club.
"I want to have that love and passion and I'm sure I will, but the one thing they will get from us is hard work and a desire to do well."
Hughes was also assistant manager to the Scotland national team in 2007.
