Preview: Norwich City vs. Crystal Palace - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Premier League clash between Norwich City and Crystal Palace, including team news and predicted lineups.

Norwich City will be looking for just their fourth Premier League win of the 2019-20 campaign when they welcome Crystal Palace to Carrow Road on New Year's Day.

The Canaries will enter 2020 bottom of the table on 13 points, while Palace sit ninth having collected 27 points from their first 20 league matches of the 2019-20 campaign.

It was always going to be tough for Norwich on their return to the Premier League, and the Canaries are the team propping up England's top flight heading into 2020.

Indeed, a record of three wins, four draws and 13 defeats from 20 matches has brought them just 13 points, leaving them six points from the safety of 17th, which is currently occupied by West Ham United.

Norwich will enter this match off the back of an impressive 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, but there is no getting away from the fact that Daniel Farke's side are in need of wins at this stage of the campaign.

The Canaries have not been victorious in the league since overcoming Everton on November 23, losing four of their last seven and picking up three draws against Arsenal, Leicester City and Spurs.

While it has been a tough season thus far, Teemu Pukki has displayed his class at the top level, managing nine Premier League goals in 20 outings during the 2019-20 campaign, with the striker showing that he is capable of being force at this level after his strong Championship form.

Palace, meanwhile, have had their ups and downs this term, but sitting ninth at this stage of the Premier League season has to be considered a success for the London club.

The Eagles have won seven of their 20 Premier League matches this term, which is just one fewer than both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. They are nine points clear of the relegation zone and just four points off fifth, which is an indication of the type of season it has been.

Palace's spot in the table is more remarkable when considering that they have managed just 18 Premier League goals this term; only Watford have a worse record in front of goal, but the Eagles boast one of the best defensive records in the division with just 22 conceded.

Roy Hodgson's side will enter this match off the back of a 1-1 draw at Southampton on December 28, which followed a 2-1 home success over West Ham United on Boxing Day.

The capital side have also won the last three Premier League meetings between the two teams, while Norwich have only been victorious in one of their last 10 match-ups in all competitions.

Team News

Norwich will again be without the services of Timm Klose, Ben Godfrey, Josip Drmic and Ralf Fahrmann through injury, but Farke is expected to make changes from the clash with Tottenham.

Pukki will again lead the line for the Canaries, although Kenny McLean, Todd Cantwell and Tom Trybull are all pushing for returns having been named on the bench against Jose Mourinho's side.

Emiliano Buendia has caught the eye in recent weeks, though, and should continue in the side.

Palace, meanwhile, still have a whole host of injury problems, with Andros Townsend, Jeffrey Schlupp, Gary Cahill, Joel Ward, Scott Dann, Christian Benteke and Patrick van Aanholt all still unavailable.

Martin Kelly should be fit despite picking up a knock against Southampton, though, and Hodgson did not see his team pick up any other problems during the 1-1 draw last time out.

Cheikhou Kouyate for James McCarthy is perhaps the only change that could occur on New Year's Day, with Wilfried Zaha again expected to be joined by Jordan Ayew and Max Meyer in attack.

Norwich City possible starting lineup:
Krul; Aarons, Zimmermann, Hanley, Lewis; Tettey, Trybull; Buendia, McLean, Cantwell; Pukki

Crystal Palace possible starting lineup:
Guaita; Kelly, Tomkins, Sakho, Riedewald; McArthur, Milivojevic, Kouyate; Meyer, Ayew, Zaha

We say: Norwich City 1-1 Crystal Palace

Norwich put a lot into their clash with Tottenham on Saturday, but it is difficult to back an away win with any real confidence considering Palace's injury problems. We fancy a low-scoring draw at Carrow Road, which would not be the worst result in the world for either side.
