US football chief Sunil Gulati 'disappointed' by Sepp Blatter re-election

US Football President Sunil Gulati says that he was "disappointed" that Sepp Blatter retained his post as FIFA head.

US football chief Sunil Gulati has said that he is "disappointed" to see Sepp Blatter re-elected as head of FIFA.

The Swiss retained his post when rival Prince Ali conceded defeat, despite calls for Blatter's resignation amid the corruption scandal that has engulfed the governing body.

"While we are disappointed in the result of the election, we will continue to push for meaningful change within FIFA," Reuters quotes Gulati as saying.

"Our goal is for governance of FIFA that is responsible, accountable, transparent and focussed solely on the best interests of the game."

Gulati, who backed Ali in the election, went on to say that he hopes Blatter will make reforming FIFA his "number one priority" during his new term.

Earlier this week, seven FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich on suspicion of corruption, money laundering and racketeering following allegations that more than $100m (£65m) has been accepted in bribes since the 1990s.

Authorities in Switzerland are investigating the decision to award the next World Cup finals to Russia and Qatar to establish whether there was foul play involved.
