Football Association proposes worldwide betting ban

The FA proposes that anyone employed in the top eight tiers of English football should be banned from betting on all matches across the world from next season.

The Football Association has proposed that anyone employed in the top eight tiers of English football should be banned from betting on all matches worldwide from next season.

Players and coaching staff are currently not allowed to bet on a match or competition that they are involved in that season.

However, new rules would see "a worldwide prohibition on betting on any other football-related matter, for example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection".

Any rule change would need to be agreed by FA shareholders at their AGM on May 21.

"The FA constantly evaluates its rules and regulations to ensure that they meet the needs of the modern game," director of football governance and regulation Darren Bailey told the FA's official website.

"The proposed betting rule adjustment to encompass all aspects of world football provides a simple and straightforward message to all participants on where the line is drawn."

Ronnie Moore was sacked as manager of Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday after admitting multiple breaches of the FA's betting rules.
