Newcastle United's Paul Dummett: 'We can only focus on ourselves'

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett is adamant that his side cannot be distracted by the Hull scoreline on the final day of the season as they seek to avoid the drop.

Newcastle United defender Paul Dummett has insisted that his side have to focus on themselves on the final day of the season, rather than worry about the Hull City scoreline.

The Magpies or Steve Bruce's men will be relegated to the Championship, with John Carver's side knowing that a victory will guarantee their place in the top flight for next season.

However, a draw or defeat to West Ham United along with a victory for Hull in their match against Manchester United will relegate the Tynesiders.

Dummett is adamant that he and his teammates have to pick up the victory at St James' Park to avoid any potential drama.

He told beINSports: "We might not have a choice because the fans may impact that with the songs they may sing. We just need to concentrate on ourselves. Three points is the main focus and guarantees us to stay in the Premier League.

"It doesn't matter what Hull do – if we win we stay in the league. I do have sympathy [for fans] because I am a fan. I don't like to see the club in the position they're in. My family and friends are fans and they don't want to see the club in the position they're in.

"Everyone wants to see this club in the Premier League and not go down. The fans have turned up every week and we have not produced for them in the last few months. Relegation is not an option –whatever it takes we have to win. It doesn't matter about Hull as long as we win."

Newcastle were last relegated to the Championship on the final day of the 2008-09 season, following their defeat to Aston Villa.
