Hull City's David Meyler confident of beating the drop

Hull City midfielder David Meyler is optimistic that his side will be able to defy the odds by beating Manchester United and retaining their Premier League status.

Hull City midfielder David Meyler is confident that his side can beat Manchester United on the final day of the season to remain in the Premier League.

The Tigers know they have to beat the Red Devils to have any chance of retaining their top-flight status, and hope that Newcastle United are unable to defeat West Ham United at St James' Park.

Meyler has conceded that he and his teammates did not expect to be in trouble on the final day following their back-to-back wins over Crystal Palace and Liverpool last month.

He told reporters: "I didn't expect this, no. Last season, we did probably exceed expectations. We knew it would be tough but this is our own fault. I am in shock when I look at the situation we are in.

"The wins the lads had against Palace and Liverpool, we thought with Burnley coming up that we would beat them and kick on. It has been our fault this year, where we haven't really kicked on after getting results. And do three or four wins in a row.

"Look at the run Leicester have been on. It has been incredible. We have not been able to do that. That's disappointing. We are in a scrap now so we come out scrapping. There is one more chance to turn it round. Why can't we do it? I believe on Sunday we will win the game. And stay in the Premier League."

Hull boss Steve Bruce has failed to beat former club United during his managerial career.
