John Carver reveals backing from Steve McClaren

Newcastle United manager John Carver reveals that he was backed by Steve McClaren in a meeting between the two earlier this week.

Newcastle United manager John Carver has revealed that he has received the backing of Steve McClaren, who has been tipped to replace him in the summer.

Reports have suggested that Newcastle are looking at Derby County boss McClaren as a potential replacement for Carver, who took the job until the end of the season following Alan Pardew's departure in January.

However, Carver has claimed that the matter was not discussed when he met McClaren at an Under-21 fixture between the two clubs earlier this week.

"I had a good chat with Steve McClaren, we had a good talk. We didn't talk about anything other than my situation and about what my players are doing on the pitch," the Newcastle boss told reporters.

"It was all about me and how I had to cope with it, and even he said, 'It's been a difficult thing for you John, I understand that. But you've handled it quite well. You've had to cope with it.'

"Steve and I go back - and Steve Round and Paul Simpson, who were there. We were all on the same Pro-Licence course together. There was nothing about what all the rumours are or anything like that, because they had to give me some respect as well, let's be honest."

Newcastle take on Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.
