Rafael Benitez 'interested in taking over at Newcastle United'

Former Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez is reportedly open to taking over at Newcastle United until the end of the season.

Former Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez is reportedly open to taking over at Newcastle United for the rest of the season.

The Spaniard, who spent six years coaching in the Premier League during his time at Liverpool, is believed to be on the club's managerial shortlist, along with ex-Manchester United boss David Moyes.

Steve McClaren is currently in charge of the Magpies, but there are widespread reports that he could be given his marching orders soon due to the club's lowly position in the Premier League table.

Newcastle are 19th in the top flight, one point from safety after winning just six of their 28 games this season.

According to The Chronicle, Benitez's representatives have held talks with Newcastle and the Spaniard is believed to be open to taking over for the remaining 10 games of the campaign, but if the North-East outfit get relegated, he is unlikely to stay on to coach in the Championship.

McClaren was appointed by Newcastle last June.
