The Magpies almost took the lead in the 13th minute when Winston Reid played the ball back to Jussi Jaaskelainen when he wasn't expecting it, but fortunately for the Hammers the pass rolled wide of the post.

Sam Allardyce responded to almost falling behind but Modibo Maiga could only head wide of the target from eight yards out, while Reid could only fire over from a similar position minutes later.

Newcastle started to get a foot in the game and were within inches of taking the lead when Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa rose highest in the penalty area to head Sylvain Marveaux's corner but his glancing effort went just wide.

Minutes later, Moussa Sissoko missed a glorious chance as he latched on to Marveaux's ball into the box, but he could only lift his side-footed shot over the bar.
